Berger, ABT LMT

Looking back at
2003, the IMA has come a long way. Thanks to the support of our
members and community, we were able to make great progress in
increasing access to integrative healthcare for all in New England:
-
Our website is now filled with resources to help
the public find qualified holistic practitioners, identify
low-cost holistic solutions when cost is a major barrier, and
locate integrative healthcare programs throughout the region. No

Low Caloric Intake Associated with Reduced Breast Cancer
Incidence
This story has been adapted from a news release issued by
Brigham and
Women’s Hospital web site and may be viewed at
http://www.brighamandwomens.org/publicaffairs
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in Boston,
Massachusetts have successfully tested in humans a long-standing
observation made in the animal model: that restricting caloric
intake could help reduce the risk of breast cancer. The study,
conducted in collaboration with researchers from Stockholm, Sweden,
also found that low caloric intake among women who go on to have
children appears to be associated with an even more pronounced
reduction in risk. The study appears in the March 10, 2004 issue of
the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Healing Depression with Medicinal Plants
By Madelon Hope,
Director of the Boston School of Herbal Studies
How many people
today lead lives not of quiet desperation, but of openly admitted
distress and fatigue? In response to these concerns, the
pharmaceutical companies are engaged in massive marketing of
psychotropic medications. What is less known is that plants can be
our partners in healing the body, mind and spirit. Many of these
plants share our environment and can be found by our houses, in our
neighborhoods and in surrounding parks and conservation land.

INTERVIEW:
Richard Furber, president & CEO Medimerge
by Catherine Saar
Personal
experience motivated Richard Furber to start MediMerge Group, LLC in
1999. After spending 17 years as a Wall Street executive
overseas, he returned to America and acquired an innovative
medical device company. Surprised by how poorly the health care
system was running, he studied the industry until he found a way he
thought he could help change it. A UC Berkeley graduate, the
54-year-old executive claims that he has always been interested in
health care and that after an encounter with an amazing homeopathic
physician in London back in 1984, he also became a proponent of
integrative medicine.

Integrative Clinic in Portland, Maine,
Enters Third Year

http://www.thecollaboration.org ).
True North Health Center, near Portland, Maine, is starting its
third year as a nonprofit integrative clinic. It grew out of
conversations among three nurses at Mercy Hospital, who wished there
were a holistic model of care to offer their patients. From that
nucleus grew a whole group of people who met weekly for three years
to talk, dream, and plan. They eventually raised $500,000 in initial
funding and then leased, gutted, and remodeled a 7,500 square-foot
facility.
