IMA Names Harvey Zarren President

The IMA is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has elected Board member Harvey Zarren to act as IMA President until the end of 2004. As President, Zarren will provide stewardship to the Board of Directors and lead strategic projects. Karl Berger, former president will continue to participate on the board and function as the IMA Coordinator.

VA to Begin Chiropractic Care

 

Veterans can receive chiropractic care at 26 selected Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities beginning this fall, according to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.

 

VA will hire or contract with doctors of chiropractic to provide the care.  In consultation with VA primary care providers, doctors of chiropractic will offer patient evaluations and chiropractic care for neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

London Researchers explore gingko as a treatment for early dementia

 The study of 250 patients aged over 55 will seek to find out whether General Practitioners (“GPs”) can help patients by prescribing the supplement to those with memory loss, one of the early symptoms of dementia.

It will be the first to test gingko as a treatment for those who are still living in the community and are being treated by their GP. Previous trials have concentrated on patients receiving hospital care, where the condition is often more advanced.

Over the past decade the trend of both athletic and non-athletic footwear has turned towards the micro-management of foot mechanics.  These pseudo-orthotics have been created for the purpose of specific motion control, and designed by numerous companies for the general public.  The question to be raised regarding these pseudo-orthotics is, do they create more problems than they were designed to relinquish? Also, do they prevent and manage lower extremity ailments, or create more havoc throughout the entire kinetic chain than originally thought?

How Cannabis Became Marihuana and How Marijuana Became Medicine

This article examines the historical, cultural and economic transformation of the plant cannabis sativa L. from a widely valued natural resource to a demon drug in the U.S. during the 20th century, and the present-day struggles between patients and care providers who seek to use cannabis medically and the DEA and other federal agencies.  Using ethnographic methods, document searches and personal interviews, the author locates the conflict within broader issues of federal vs. local authority, social policies and identity formation, social movements and censorship.
