An Evolutionary
Vision for the Integrative Medicine Alliance
As the
Integrative Medicine Alliance (“IMA”) enters its sixth year, the
Board of Directors looks to the future with anticipation and is
pleased to share its emerging vision for the organization with
members and readers. In September of 2004, the current IMA Board
began a process to renew IMA’s mission at a weekend retreat hosted
by Board member Kristen Lombard, RN at the True North Center in
Falmouth ME. The board emerged with a focus on the concept of
deepening the
quality of the human experience in healthcare.

Industry News and Legislative Updates
New Health Care Survey Shows Need for Conservative,
Drug-Free Options, Says American Chiropractic Association
This story adapted from a November 19, 2004 press release published
on The
American Chiropractic Association’s website
http://www.amerchiro.org/media/releases/111904.shtml
A new survey showing that nearly half of all Americans are concerned
about the safety of the medical care they receive was released Nov.
17 by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, and the Harvard School of Public Health. The
survey comes five years after a groundbreaking Institute of Medicine
(“IOM”) report found that hospital-based medical errors were the
eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Despite the
increased focus the 1999 report placed on improving health care
quality, 40 percent of those recently surveyed believe the situation
has actually worsened in the past five years. More disturbing is the
fact that one-third of those surveyed say that they or a family
member has experienced a
medical
error at some point in their life.

The appropriate use of vitamin E remains the
subject of research and debate as indicated by the two
releases below.
High doses of vitamin E supplements MAY DO MORE harm than good
This story
has been adapted from a news release issued by the American Heart
Association
Daily vitamin E

FLU SEASON:
How to prevent flu without a vaccine
The Flu Shot
Phenomenon
Submitted by
David Sneikus
Consider
yourself lucky if you were unable to get a flu shot.
It is not the answer to preventing the flu! It’s easy to think we
are killing the bugs, the germs, the viruses with drugs or
antibodies. But the current belief that infections are caused by
particularly vicious strains of bacteria is backwards. The truth is
germs are not the enemy! Furthermore, they have been here for 3.2
billion years and are very adaptable.

The Role of ARt in INTEGRATIVE Medicine
By
Naj Wikoff, President, the Society for the Arts in Healthcare
The value of the arts as part of an integrative approach to medicine
is gaining some remarkable traction. Duke Medical Center researcher
Dr. Mitchell Krucoff, in a national trial to determine the effects
of prayer on patients undergoing heart angioplasty or
catheterization, discovered that patients had death rates 30 percent
lower than any other patients when music was combined with prayer
(over those who received a music intervention, received standard
care or, unbeknownst to them, were prayed for).
