CELEBRATING CATHERINE SAAR

In this edition of the IMA Newsletter, we celebrate Catherine Saar, who has had to give up the editorship of our online newsletter because of demands of work.

The IMA offers its heartfelt thanks to Julia Smith for her hard work as the IMA's Administrator, which began in January of 2004 and was completed last August.  Julia did a fine job at processing the IMA's memberships, answering queries from the general public, and updating the IMA website.  Many thanks!

IMA ANNOUNCES THREE ADDITIONAL BOARD MEMBERS

The IMA is pleased to introduce three new members of the IMA Board of Directors. 

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:  DARYL BENNETT

The IMA wishes to acknowledge Daryl Bennett as the IMA Volunteer of the Month.  Daryl personally supported the IMA’s Mobil Clinic held at the Tufts University School of Medicine in March.

The IMA has had an interesting and active year during 2005, with event sponsorship, a leadership session, and organizational changes.

2004 in Review

With our newsletter hiatus, it’s worth reviewing the accomplishments of the IMA in 2004.In September of 2004, at an intensive and very productive Board Retreat, the IMA restated its mission as:  “INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE ALLIANCE: DEEPENING THE QUALITY OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE IN HEALTHCARE.”

In the December 2004 edition of the IMA newsletter, the Board of Directors shared its emerging vision for IMA developed during a retreat to look at the IMA’s mission. INDUSTRY NEWS AND LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

Brian berman, mD named recipient of $100,000 bravewell leadership award for integrative medicine

Dr. Brian Berman, one of the leading physicians in America to champion the growth of integrative medicine, was named by the Bravewell Collaborative as recipient of the 2005 Bravewell Leadership Award.  Dr. Berman is founder and director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, which was the first clinic of its kind in the nation.

traditional medicines congress calls for comments on "ideal Regulatory model"  

Nine national organizations working together as the Traditional Medicines (TM) Congress* have released the first public draft of " A Proposed Regulatory Model for Traditional Medicines: Guiding Assumptions and Key Components."  This comprehensive document presents ideas for a new model for the regulation of traditional medicines in the United States, and will now be subject to an open review process by interested individuals and organizations.

I initially joined the IMA because of the caliber of the people associated with it – mature, caring, competent practitioners of every sort, all interested in the quality and integration of health care.  I agreed to serve on the Board of the IMA because of its goals. Deepening the quality of the human experience in healthcare, bridging complementary and conventional practices, spreading the word about integrative medicine concepts, practices and events around New England, and providing free complementary and alternative experiences to conventional medical students and practitioners as well as to others seeking to expand their healthcare options.

The HEaling Gift of time

Healthcare in the United States in 2005 is confronted with a lot of quality issues and quality initiatives theoretically aimed at correcting the issues. Few if any of the initiatives are addressing a fundamental defect of modern conventional healthcare. Currently, conventional healthcare practitioners do not have adequate time with patients. Physicians do not get adequate time in the office or in the hospital with patients and nurses do not get adequate time at the bedside with patients.

 Is integrative medicine alive and well in new england?

IMA recently invited the IMA community to share brief stories focusing on how integrative medicine is alive in New England, including success and challenges.  We heard from several readers, and present these stories for your information and inspiration!

healthcare students attend conference to deepen knowledge about cam

Boston Students for Integrative Medicine (BSIM) held an Integrative Medicine and Student Wellness Conference for healthcare students on Saturday, March 5, 2005. The conference was held at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA.

The conference was sponsored by Tufts University School of Medicine, the Tufts Wellness Committee, the American Medical Students Association EDCAM Grant and the Integrative Medicine Alliance.

The goal of the conference was to promote education and awareness about Complementary and Integrative Medicine among medical students, and to educate students on techniques for self-care during school and throughout their professional years.
