Flu Wilkie Helps the Holistic Community Respond to Avian Flu

By Karlo Berger

The threat of an Avian Flu pandemic has become big news in recent months, and its implications for caregivers of all backgrounds are enormous.  Although integrative and holistic caregivers have been largely left out of pandemic preparedness efforts, they are slowly beginning to make their voices heard.

In response to this threat, a group of public health activists and concerned citizens have launched Flu Wikie (www.FluWikie.com), a comprehensive information resource that aims to help local communities prepare for and perhaps cope with a possible influenza pandemic.   Like the well-known Wikipedia ( www.Wikipedia.org), FluWikie allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content.

Flu Wikie takes a neutral stance towards complementary and alternative medicine, and its Alternative Medicine Resource Page at www.fluwikie.com/index.php?n=Consequences.ComplementaryAndAlternativeMedicine showcases a wide range of holistic approaches on how to avoid catching Avian Flu and how to possibly treat or alleviate it, should it become easily contagious.

If the quality of health information found on it continues to improve, Flu Wikie's Alternative Medicine Resource Page could be lifesaving should a pandemic arise and an effective vaccine is not easily available to all.  I encourage all caregivers to visit FluWikie and help make it the remarkable integrative public health resource it could be, and is becoming.  Flu Wikie needs your wisdom on possible non-vaccine approaches to handling this deadly illness.

Karlo Berger is founder of the IMA and runs Whole Health Solutions, a consulting business which builds bridges between conventional and alternative healthcare, and which provides professional development for holistic and integrative caregivers.  His next Avian Flu Pandemic Preparedness Training for Holistic Caregivers will be held on Saturday, January 14th at the Charles River School of Shiatsu in Cambridge, MA.  For more details, visit www.KarloBerger.com.
