HEALTHCARE STUDENTS ATTEND CONFERENCE TO DEEPEN KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CAM
Boston Students
for Integrative Medicine (BSIM) held an Integrative Medicine and
Student Wellness Conference for healthcare students on Saturday, March
5, 2005. The conference was held at Tufts University School of
Medicine in Boston, MA.
The conference was
sponsored by Tufts University School of Medicine, the Tufts Wellness
Committee, the American Medical Students Association EDCAM Grant and
the Integrative Medicine Alliance.
The goal of the
conference was to promote education and awareness about Complementary
and Integrative Medicine among medical students, and to educate
students on techniques for self-care during school and throughout
their professional years.
Students attended
from Tufts, Harvard, Boston University, U Mass, Brown, Yale and the
New England School of Acupuncture.
The conference
started with a warm introduction by Michelle Wong, TUSM ’07.
A
multidisciplinary team evaluation of a chronic pain patient followed,
presented by Eric Leskowitz, M.D., Tamara Geist, P.T. and Janice
Wesley, P.T. Next, Rob Saper, M.D., M.P.H. presented a superb talk
entitled “Alternative, Complementary and Integrative Medicine:
Definitions, Trends, and Research.”
Following a
healthy lunch, workshops were available on Energy Boosters,
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yoga and Meditation, Qi
Gong, Osteopathic Manipulation, Therapeutic Massage, Cupping and a 4th
year elective possibility in China.
Naj Wikoff,
President of the Society for the Arts in Healthcare did presentations
on “The Arts & Humanities in Healthcare and Medical Education. The
closing presentation, by Dr. Harvey Zarren, President of the IMA
Board, was on “Self-care as a Model for Integrative Medicine.”
During the
conference, the IMA put on a Mobile Clinic staffed by volunteers
including:
CranioSacral Therapy (Barbara May),
Crystal Therapy (Anne Marie Wells),
Healing Touch (Jeanne Colbath & June Kruger),
Massage (Patty Wang, Tom Birmingham, Theresa Ochenkoski),
Reflexology (Jill Briansky),
Reiki (Daryl Bennett, Marilyn Carter, Janice Ward),
Vibroacoustics (Donnamarie Kavanah)
The
Mobile Clinic, ably coordinated by Cynthia Linton, provided 120
individual experiences to students during the afternoon. The students
had an opportunity to have the different modes of therapy rather than
just reading or hearing about them. Students said that experiencing
the modes of therapy provided them with possibilities for self-care as
well as broadening their thoughts about what modes of therapy can be
helpful for patient care.
The
Mobile Clinic was supported by Daryl Bennett, RN, Reiki Master
Teacher, in honor of her deceased Mother, Pauline Ray Bartl. The Mobil
Clinic provided another concrete example of how the IMA works to
deepen the quality of the human experience in healthcare.
The
entire conference was an extraordinary opportunity to open
conventional and complementary students to a variety of modes of
practice. In addition the conference was an opportunity to broaden
thoughts and knowledge about integrated healthcare and to integrate
concepts about the arts, humanities, self-care and human caring into
the conventional medical training experience.
Imagine how the day’s experience might positively affect the future
practitioners and their patients.
