 SnowflakeDear Visitor,

Welcome to the Winter 2008 edition of the Integrative Medicine Alliance's Newsletter.  We are grateful that you have taken the time to read the IMA newsletter and hope you will consider playing an active role in the IMA during 2008 as we continue to work for change and healing in healthcare.

Our Dream Practice column continues in this issue with a vision of a healing village by holistic therapist, Julie Matheson.  Executive director of Pathways to Wellness, Kristen Porter, explores the successful partnership of east meeting west in healthcare delivery in our featured Success Story.  IMA President, Harvey Zarren, shares with us his thoughts on time, a necessary component of quality healthcare. You may be interested in learning more about the American Holistic Nurses Association 28th annual conference, which will be held in New Hampshire this year. We have included information below.

As always, we welcome your thoughts, comments, energy and talents to grow and nurture the Integrative Medicine Alliance.
President's Message
Harvey Zarren, MD, FACC

winter trees

The current focus on healthcare is expressed primarily in financial terms: dismay over the amount of the Gross National Product going for healthcare, the cost per individual for healthcare, the cost of each American-made new car that derives from healthcare expenditures and the skyrocketing cost of health insurance are all constantly in the news.

Practitioners, whether of conventional medicine or complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) know that time is the essential ingredient for quality healthcare. Under our current privately insured healthcare system, time is not seen as valuable and thus is not reimbursed appropriately. The results are clear: declining quality of patient experiences, declining quality of practitioner experiences and progressive disillusionment with our current healthcare.

With thanks....
Board Member Changes

The IMA wishes to thank Rosa Buffone and Emily Klein for their Board membership and contributions. Both Rosa and Emily have found it necessary to step off the Board for personal reasons.

We wish them well in the future and they are welcome to rejoin us if and when they feel it is appropriate.

Joining the IMA as a new Board member is Debbie West. We are grateful to have Debbie's expertise and energy helping to nurture and grow the IMA.

Let's Build a Dream Practice
Visioning, Collaborating, Transforming

Candle

What wonderfully healing images Julie Matheson paints for us in her Dream Practice article entitled: "Vision for a Healing Village".  We encourage you to continue visioning, dreaming, collaborating and transforming what a health care practice could look like in the future.  If you would like to share your thoughts with others, send your Dream Practice articles to Harvey for possible inclusion in a future newsletter.

East Meets West Under the Same Roof in Successful Partnership

by Kristen E. Porter, MAc, LAc

Executive Director, Pathways to Wellness

What happens when east meets west in medicine?

Judging by the partnership between Pathways to Wellness and the South End Community Health Center (SECHC), what happens is improved, comprehensive treatment for patients.

With your help the IMA will continue to foster networking, dialogue, education and collaboration between conventional and complementary/alternative medicine practitioners in order to deepen the quality of the human experience of healthcare. Many thanks!

Sincerely,

The IMA Board of Directors
